Leamington 26, Droitwich 20

DROITWICH were stunned by a Leamington fightback as they suffered a third defeat of the season in the Midlands Division Two West (South) on Saturday.

At one stage, Spa had been leading by six points, only for the home side to take the win with two late tries.

It saw them miss an opportunity to move up the table and leaves them second from bottom.

Droitwich started the stron-ger and dominated the first few plays, only for one of a number of individual errors to gift Leamington the chance to attack their line and, under pressure, Spa conceded a penalty, which the hosts converted.

But the away side hit back well and a strong run by James Thomas allowed Rob Poke to score a try in the corner, which Bobby Scott-Walker duly converted.

Droitwich now had the momentum and good running by the ever-present Nick Godfrey gave Spa the chance to extend the lead after the referee awarded a penalty, and Scott-Walker added the three points to put Spa 14-3 ahead.

However, at the start of the second half Spa started slowly and, after another individual error, Leamington were handed the opportunity to run a try in under the posts unopposed.

With the game now tight and with no margin for mistakes, Leamington edged into a slender lead thanks to a drop goal.

Once again, Droitwich went into the lead when brothers Ian and Nathan Conda combined with good effect for the latter to touch down.

Scott-Walker then added the conversion from the touchline to put Spa six points ahead.

However, Leamington went for broke and Spa could not prevail despite great tackling by Joey Roberts and captain James Shewell.

The hosts scored two late tries to win the game and leave Spa with just a bonus point.

Droitwich can take credit from a much-improved performance.

And they hope to have several players back in action, and they will be looking to beat Malvern at the Glynn Mitchell Memorial Ground on Saturday (3pm ko).
