BARNT Green won’t be resting on their laurels after securing second place in the Birmingham and District League Premier Division, says captain Andy Sutton.

The Cherry Hill Road side defeated Brockhampton by eight wickets to secure a superb finish in the league.

Many wrote off Green’s chances after a several senior players left a host of gifted young players were drafted in.

But they surprised everyone to mount a title challenge and push eventual winners West Bromwich Dartmouth all the way.

Sutton said: “People were writing us off in the summer because of all the changes but we’ve proved them all wrong.

“But we’ll still be trying to improve over the winter, we’ll all sit down and talk about what we can do.

“It may be we try and add some strength in depth over the winter.

“But the team’s average age is only 24 so we’re only going to get better. We haven’t won anything yet but we would like to.”

Green certainly completed their summer in style against a strong Brockhampton outfit.

Sutton won the toss and opted to bowl first, dismissing the visitors for 158.

Tom Burton (3-18), Simon Mugava (3-22) and Sutton (2-20) were in good form with the ball.

Sixteen-year-old Henry Moberley made his first half century for the firsts with a brisk 54 runs off 60 balls, while Ed Pollock, 19, smashed 70 runs as Green reached 159-2.

“Henry has done extremely well considering that was only his fourth game for the firsts,” commented the skipper.

“I also cannot fault Ed, he’s been brilliant and has averaged 50 runs a game for us.”
