Green players told to learn from ‘destroyer’

CAPTAIN Andy Sutton has told Barnt Green’s players to learn from chief destroyer Darren Maddy after Saturday’s defeat to Berkswell.

The Cherry Hill Road outfit were put to the sword by the former Warwickshire man, who scored a decisive 83 runs.

Green’s opponents had made 248 all out, with James East taking an impressive six wicket haul for just 30 runs.

But in reply, they were dismissed for 113, with only Edward Pollock (24) and Tom Banton (31) getting any runs.

Sutton said: “Sometimes you’ve got to hold your hands up and say that we were beaten by a better team.

“On the day, Berkswell batted, fielded and bowled better then we did.

“Darren’s innings was probably the key performance and it was a great example of one day batting.

“He played things straight, took his time and only once he was settled in did he really let loose.

“It’s definitely something our young batsmen can learn from. He’s still good enough to be playing first class cricket.

“They play four or five shots and then go straight for the big shots and they are getting out too easily.

“I thought James East bowled well but others, like my self, were not at our best.”

Green are now eighth in the Birmingham and District League Premier Division.

Of their six games so far, they have had three abandoned, won two and tasted defeat just once.

They will be aiming to bounce back at home to Walmley on Saturday (noon start).

Luke Radford’s suspension will be concluded, meaning he will be available for Sunday’s clash at home to Penkridge in the Birmingham League National T20 Cup (2pm start).

Green have already defeated Kidderminster and would meet the winners of West Bromwich and Old Hill in the next stage.

Sutton added: “We are hoping for some decent weather because we have two games which will hopefully attract a few people into the club.”

With Sam Cheshire two games into his six-match ban, Adam Smith will come out of retirement to play as wicketkeeper.
