Boar sink Shifnal to take top spot
1:01pm Monday 2nd June 2014 in Sport
BROMSGROVE continued their 100 per cent record as a 97 victory over Shifnal propelled them to the top of the Birmingham and District League Division One.
The Boars have endured a stop-start beginning to the summer but despite having three of their first six matches abandoned, they have won the rest.
With Ombersley being held to a draw by Old Hill, Bromsgrove's 24 point haul catapulted them to the top.
Captain Mark Evenson had lost the toss as they were put into bat but they seized the initiative on a wet wicket.
The game was delayed by 90 minutes, leaving both sides with just 43 overs to bat.
The hosts lost opening batsmen Ashley Newdick for a duck when he was caught by Simon Gregory off Graeme Cessford's bowling.
Adam Jones (5) also went cheaply but the Boars recovered from 37-2 as the rest of the order contributed.
Joe Dodd (29), Jayden Levitt (22), Tom Underhill (32), Tom Green (20) and Ryan Pedley (23) all added runs as they recorded 173-7.
Bromsgrove's bowlers also worked well as a unit as Shifnal were bowled out for 76.
Graeme Whiles made a welcome return from injury with three wickets for 16 runs in his 11 overs and also removed their most dangerous batsmen when bowling former Pakistan batsman Mohammad Ayub.
James Ganderton (3-22) took crucial wickets, while Evenson (2-5) and Newdick (2-10) also chipped in.
Evenson said: "We thought 150 runs was par so to score 170 runs was really taking charge of the game.
"Almost everyone chipped in with the runs and it put us on the front foot.
"It was good to see Graeme back in action and he took one of the key wickets in their Pakistan international Ayub.
"But again all of the bowlers took wickets, apart from Will Tuffin who actually bowled well and was unlucky."
Bromsgrove return to action with a trip to Oswestry (noon start).
