Green suspend pair after Kidderminster Victoria incident

BARNT Green have imposed bans on bowler Luke Radford and wicketkeeper Sam Cheshire following an incident during last week’s win over Kidderminster.

Cheshire began a six-match suspension during Saturday’s abandoned clash against Dorridge, while Radford commenced a three-match hiatus.

The duo were involved in an unsavoury moment with Kidderminster Gareth Williams, who also has been hit with a three-game ban.

Williams has been punished for allegedly barging into Radford, who then reacted, during the Birmingham League game’s final over. Cheshire has been hit with a more severe punishment after rushing from behind his wicket to confront the Kidderminster man and push him to the ground.

Green acted quickly to deal with the situation internally and are hoping it will be enough to satisfy the Birmingham League.

President Paul Clarke said: “As a club we had to send out the message that any physical contact is very serious, unacceptable and completely wrong in sport.

“In the past the club has suspended players because of dissent but it’s very rare that these more serious incidents occur, I don’t think there’s been a lengthy ban like this since the 1990s.”

Meanwhile, Green will be hoping for better weather when they take on in-form Berkswell in the league on Saturday (noon start).

This weekend’s clash against Dorridge was abandoned before a ball could be bowled in anger because of torrential rain.

Tom Banton, who studies at Bromsgrove School, would have replaced Cheshire behind the stumps against Dorridge and is expected to play against Berkswell. Adam Smith is also set to come out of retirement to play several matches.

Captain Andy Sutton said: “Berkswell are a very good side, Dominic Ostler is playing well.”
