GRAEME Whiles produced a devastating display of bowling as Bromsgrove defeated Harborne by 37 runs in the Birmingham League Division One.

The 20-year-old right-arm medium pacer destroyed Harborne’s top order as he notched up an impressive total of 5-20 in his ten overs with the new ball.

That saw the Boars respond well to having their first game of the season abandoned because of rain last week.

Skipper Mark Evenson won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first as the wicket was a pre-used pitch.

But Bromsgrove slipped to 27-3 as Joe Dodd, Lewis Cordes and Jayden Levitt all returned to the pavilion having been dismissed cheaply.

It was left to Ashley Newdick (56) and Tom Underhill (27) to steady the ship.

Some late middle order hitting from Tom Green (52) and the runs from the tail-end batsmen saw Bromsgrove reach 194-9 in their 50 overs.

Harborne’s pick of the bowlers were Tom Payne (3-50) and Amot Patel (2-28).

In reply, Harborne were blown away by the pace of Bromsgrove new signing Whiles.

He dismissed Warwickshire Academy player Jim Clifford and Andy Lloyd, both for nought. Seventeen-year-old debutant Will Tuffin provided a capable foil for Whiles, bowling with great control from the other end to keep the pressure on.

Harborne were soon 16-4, but Tom Payne and Matt Parker provided some resistance before Evenson (2-33) had Parker (20) trapped lbw.

Payne chipped away at the total with some great ball striking, but Ganderton and Newdick (2-32) in tandem provided tight bowling keeping the run-rate close to seven an over.

Evenson removed the threat of Payne (82) and Harborne were eventually dismissed for 157 in the 46th over.

Bromsgrove are at home to Smethwick on Saturday (noon start).
