IMPRESSIVE Bromsgrove extended their lead at the top of the West Midlands Division One after back-to-back wins over the weekend.

Saturday’s emphatic 7-4 victory over Old Wulfs was followed up by a thrilling 3-2 win over title rivals Solihull Blossomfield the following day.

Those vital wins mean the St Godwald’s-based outfit boast a nine-point lead over Solihull after six wins in their first eight games.

Against Wulfs, Nathan Glass was finally able to make his debut after missing half the season due to a transfer embargo.

Bromsgrove raced to a 4 -1 lead by half-time.

Karl Sharkey and Veit Wasserfuhr each scored after a neat interchange of passes with each other. Sharkey added a second and Anton Sieg bagged a fourth from a penalty corner.

Wasserfuhr and Sieg struck again to increase their lead to 6 -1 before an Old Wulfs fight back reduced the lead to 6-4.

But Wasserfuhr completed his hat-trick to seal a deserved victory and move Bromsgrove up to second in the table.

On Sunday, Bromsgrove travelled to Solihull Blossomfield in a top of the table clash rearranged due to a frozen pitch a few weeks ago.

With the likes of goalkeeper Matt Russell, captain Laurence Shah and Chris Uren all missing because of the rearrangement, Jed Parke was called upon to make his first team debut.

The hosts dominated the first half and took the lead, but wasted a good chance to increase their advantage.

They were made to pay just before half-time as Bromsgrove added insult to injury when Karl Sharkey managed to sweep the ball home with the reverse stick to equalise.

Bromsgrove slipped 2-1 behind after Solihull scored from a contentious penalty corner.

To make matter worse, Tom Green was sin-binned for a tackle, but the away side made it 2-2 when Tom Jennings pounced on a pass and unleashed an unstoppable shot in to the top corner.

Home defender Ziggy Smith was then sin-binned and Sieg put away the flick after Wasserfuhr was upended by Solihull goalie.

But the visitors were reduced to nine men when Green, who had only just returned to action, and Sieg were dismissed.

Bromsgrove then weathered a late push by Blossomfield, with Parke making two fine saves.

They end the first part of the season with a clash at north midlands rivals Bloxwich on Saturday.
