Bates and Hallows lose in the final

COMPETITORS from throughout Worcestershire and Warwickshire took part in Bromsgrove Tennis Club’s mixed doubles tournament.
The event, organised by chairman Steve Jones, was won by Chris Bar-Hamilton (West Malvern) Hannah Percheon (Hallow), who defeated the Droitwich duo Sophie Hallows and Neil Bates in the final 6-3.
Jones said: “It’s been a great day with excellent tennis being played in a competitive but friendly spirit.
“With players coming from a wide area I’m pleased the tournament continues to flourish and build Bromsgrove Tennis Club’s reputation as one of the leading clubs for all standards of players.”
The run of poor results for the men continued as the B team went down 4-2 to a strong Stourbridge B team in their final match of the summer season, leaving them at the wrong end of the table, but well clear of relegation.
The men’s E team played away at Bewdley and with a depleted team went down 5-1.
The lone victory went to Paul Jubb and Aaron Oakes who won in three sets, including two 10-8 tie breaks.
The ladies E team, after being promoted to Division Seven last year, were battling to stay up in their final game against David Lloyd Dudley and needed to take at least one rubber to ensure survival.
A strong performance against a team who have had a good season gave them a 3-3 draw to avoid the drop.
The first pair of Lorraine Russell and Anne Simper played Dudley's first pair, who were young women with tremendous top spin and power.
Dogged determination saw them through to a tie break in set one which they won and followed it up with a 6-2 win in the second set.
With the pressure off they then lost to the second pair, 6-2,6-1. Bromsgrove’s second team of Lisa Rushton and Yvonne Priestman beat Dudley's third pair 6-3,6-0 and then struggled against their strong first pair losing 6-3,6-1.
The new pairing of Sue Forrest and Lizzie Davidge lost to their seond pair 6-3, 6-1 and beat their third duo 6-4,6-4.
