Anybody following the sad saga of Bromsgrove Rovers will be wondering how such a state of affairs could have come about to a football club that was just one place away from getting promoted to the Football League in 1993.
The demise of the club is solely the fault of successive owners who have failed to run the club properly and alienated the majority of supporters.
The new ownership of the elusive Mike Ward does not bode well for the future either. Unusually for somebody taking over a football club, he has kept a low profile leaving most people suspicious of his motives and intentions.
With the club still under a financial administration, huge debts still outstanding, crowd attendances dropping each game played and bankruptcy looming, one wonders if Bromsgrove Rovers has any future at all.
The administrators, Sanderlings, have done their level best to keep other interested parties out of bidding for the club including a viable and well-planned bid from a consortium of former directors and fans.
Nobody really knows why Mr Ward, with little interest and no previous connection to the club, is so desperate to take it over. He refuses to tell us so inevitably there is a suspicion of a hidden agenda. Bromsgrove deserves to have a top-class football team and I am prepared to put my back into a new club for the town in Bromsgrove Sporting. If we do not set up a new club, we could well be left without football at a reasonable level in the town.
Former chairman, Tom Herbert, was often heard saying that he would close Bromsgrove Rovers down rather than hand it over to supporters.
Well if that was his wish, it may soon be coming true.
I think I can speak on behalf of all people who have supported Rovers in recent years that these are sad times and the quicker everybody involved with the current regime gets of out town and are never seen again the happier we will all be.
Phil Baker, member of the Bromsgrove Sporting consortium
