Prince Charles has been receiving a great deal of flack from the arty community, especially architects, who feel that both he and us commoners have no understanding of taste where new buildings are concerned and that we should shut up and leave it to the experts.
What a joke, if only Droitwich had a Prince Charles who could have defended us against so called modernism.
I have included three examples, although I am sure your readers can list many more.
My first contestant for Droitwich’s worst modern building is The Telephone Exchange, in Worcester Road, opposite the iconic High Street. Functional maybe, but completely devoid of any redeeming features.
The second contestant is the police station in Ombersley Street ( even a good clean might help) and thirdly (any guesses?) yes of course the new medical centre strangely next door to the police station.
Can anyone see why we were gifted with a painted cinderblock building where the original plan to clad the building appeared to be changed half way through when it was realised that the battleship grey colour made it look more suitable as a mortuary than a building intended to promote health and well-being.
I could go on, but please let planners be aware that us plebs may be keeping a closer watch in the future.
Keith Slaughter, Whittingham Court, Tower Hill, Droitwich Spa
