I THINK the High Street in Droitwich is an excellent place for 'our' Youth Club (Advertiser page one last week), and I say ‘our’ because this is a place for the youth of our town and it is right and proper that they should be there in the heart of the town.

The town centre is just that, central, and as the youngsters gravitate towards the town centre now anyway, it will mean that the club is where they want it to be – right in the centre of town, which arguably makes it more likely to be a success than if its put somewhere on the outskirts.

It will also, arguably, have more of a chance of drawing our young people in off the streets.

It will also be away from residential areas but not isolated from them, making it inclusive and yet not intrusive.

The youth of this town have a real raw deal. Where is there for them to go in the evenings?

Who wants them in their ‘back yard’ so to speak?

Not even their parents sometimes, and certainly not me when they're playing up. So yes, I know some of them are beyond the pale but not all of them, and not all of them all of the time.

This is our youth, our town’s future parents, perhaps even our future, so let’s start treating them with some consideration and tolerance, let’s offer them some support and direction.

Let’s give them ownership of their rightful place in this town.

We already have excellent community and police officers who work hard because they really care about what happens to the young people of this town and we need to support them and this project and help reclaim the hearts and minds of the youth of our town.

Let’s show them this town cares about them and perhaps they will then begin, in time, to care about this town and their place in it.

Who knows?
