M F Pearson (“Outrage over animal abuse”, Advertiser, May 13) is correct to describe slaughterhouses as “brutal places” and to advise readers that they can find more information on the Animal Aid website at www.animalaid.co.uk if “they are outraged sufficiently to change their diet”.

Cruelty in slaughterhouses is not the only form of suffering that animals reared for food have to undergo, however, as the vast majority spend their lives in appalling factory farm conditions, before being crammed into lorries to be sent to their deaths.

All this suffering and slaughter is totally unnecessary, because we can all live perfectly healthily without meat or any other animal products.

Thankfully more and more people are becoming vegan or vegetarian every year and many others are reducing their consumption of meat, fish, eggs and dairy out of concern for animals, the environment or their own health.

Worcestershire Vegans & Veggies exists to help people switch to a more humane diet and lifestyle and we can be contacted at info@worcsveg.
