NOW the High Street is finished, I was looking forward to the return of the popular monthly farmers’ market.

However, on a recent trip to Webb’s Garden Centre I noticed the farmers market is still scheduled to take place there on the second Saturday of each month. Further queries on the Worcestershire Farmers Markets website show this to be true and that the market will be held at Webbs for the foreseeable future.

I have also made inquiries of a friend who is a member of the association and I am told Bromsgrove Council did not offer the farmers market an alternative location during the revamp of the High Street and were basically told to “go away”

and come back in six months.

Forced to look elsewhere, the farmers market negotiated pitches at Webbs and finding that revenues are good, have no intention of returning to the High Street.

Bromsgrove Council has been short-sighted over this. It could, for instance, have allowed the market to be set up in Windsor Street car park.

I am sure the loss of revenue from part of that car park, on one day a month, could have been borne by the council in order to keep the good will of the market traders.

I have also noticed that in spite of being told that take up was good for market pitches on the new High Street, several of my old favourites have failed to return.

Can anyone from the council say if any incentives are being planned to get the farmers market to return and to fill the empty pitches for the ordinary market.
