A DROITWICH family helped a group of Tesco staff raise an incredible £57,530 for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
Jane and Mark Field took to the stage as after-dinner speakers at a charity clay pigeon shooting event to talk about the impact that muscular dystrophy has had on their lives since their 11-year-old son Murray was diagnosed with a form of the disease.
Murray has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a devastating, incurable and life-limiting condition that causes muscles to waste away, making him get progressively weaker and preventing him from performing simple tasks such as turning the pages of a book or brushing his hair.
All the money raised will help provide vital specialist equipment, such as mobile arm supports, electric page turners and powered wheelchairs, for children who are affected by muscle disease.
Following the shooting contest, which raised thousands, the 125 competitors took part in a charity auction. The star prize, which raised £2,000, was an incredible week’s holiday in the Greek islands aboard a 44ft yacht. Other prizes included an ultimate driving experience and tickets to every event on golf’s European Tour, helping the auction raise nearly £6,000.
Jane Field, of King George Avenue, Droitwich, said: ”We were delighted to come along to this event and talk to everyone about the effect that muscular dystrophy has had on our lives.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that the event has raised such a fantastic amount to help children like Murray who are affected by muscle disease.”
Jeremy Church, event organiser and Tesco project manager, said: “The event went fantastically well and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. The competition and the auction room were both fiercely contested but I’m delighted we could raise so much money so that the real winners at the end of the day were the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and children like Murray who need this equipment.”
