AN eye-opening museum has received an award for proving it has the right idea when it comes to heritage.
The Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre and Salt Museum in Victoria Square has gained official recognition for setting the required standard when it comes to teaching visitors all about the history of the salt town.
The accreditation by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) comes after two years’ hard work by the centre’s staff.
There are currently exhibitions explaining why Droitwich boomed as a salt town famous for its brine baths from pre-Roman times to the present day.
Visitors can also roll up their sleeves for a spot of brass rubbing and listen to music and recording from the last century, when Droitwich was picked as a home for a high-powered radio transmitter.
The MLA’s museum accreditation scheme sets nationally agreed standards for all museums in the UK.
The council’s judges found the centre more than measured up to guidelines on looking after collections, educating visitors and day-to-day running.
Town clerk Pam Craney said: “I am over the moon. We have worked for two years towards achieving accreditation and it is a real testament to the work that our heritage officers Linda Stanton and Kay Goodwin in particular have put in.”
She said the centre had benefited from the “unstinting support” of the town council in improving the museum.
“I should also pay tribute to the volunteers who work without reward and have helped us to achieve improvements.”
MLA chairman Andrew Motion said: “Receiving this award is an impressive achievement. It recognises the high standard and service the museum provides and acknowledges staff’s hard work.”
