Worcester pupils learn vital safety lesson from fire crews

FIREFIGHTERS visited a Worcester school to teach pupils about safety.

Children at Whittington CE Primary School were taking part in a health-themed week.

As well as healthy eating and exercise, the children were taught some essential information about safety in the home.

Firefighters from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service taught pupils about the ‘stop, drop and roll’ technique if their clothes were on fire. And they also spent time in a simulator called a ‘smokehouse’.

Gaynor Mills, year three class teacher, said: “Fake ‘smoke’ was piped into the simulator and the children were taught how to drop to the ground, where there is more air, and to crawl to safety.

“They were also taught about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home that is regularly checked.

“The fire service staff were excellent throughout the morning and the children were really motivated by the range of activities they provided.

“They especially enjoyed the simulator and though it was fun they really learned how scary it would be to be in a smoke filled room and what they would need to do to get out safely.”
