FEARS have been raised again about overcrowding on the platforms at Worcester's Foregate Street Station.

A reader sent us a picture of platform two of the station, which was overcrowded on Tuesday morning.

The picture, taken at around 8.30am, shows dozens of passengers waiting for trains.

Readers have called the situation “unsafe” due to the number of people on the platform, with commuters waiting past the yellow line that people are told to stand behind for safety reasons.

Announcements also had to be made over the tannoy by station staff warning people waiting for trains to leave a gap, so that those alighting from trains could get to the lift and stairs to leave the station.

It's not the first time the issue of overcrowding on trains and platforms has been raised, with the problem one of the key issues raised by commuters during a consultation on the future of rail services in Worcestershire in 2016.

That followed a concerning incident just a few months before when a schoolgirl was knocked over in a crush on the platform.

In that incident, the number of commuters built up on the platform after an earlier train was delayed, with around 22 people scrambling to board the later train.

A spokesman for West Midlands Trains, which operates the station, said: “Demand for our services continues to grow.

“We are addressing this by introducing an additional 410 carriages to our network by 2021. Safety of our passengers is our number one concern.

“We regularly make announcements about the importance of staying behind the yellow line.

“This applies at all time of the day, not just the busy morning and evening periods.”

Meanwhile, the railway station’s double electric doors, that exit onto an alleyway to Foregate Street, between the cycle rack and Bodega, have been out of action.

One of the door’s bottom glass panes has been smashed and taped over, with a message on display to rail users reading: “Door out of use.

“Please use main entrance.”

The West Midlands Trains spokesman said: “The damaged doors were reported by the station on Tuesday morning.

“We have had repairers on site - British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating.

“We would urge anyone with any information about how the doors may have been damaged to get in touch with the BTP.”

A BTP spokesman said: “It is believed that the entrance door was smashed between 12.20am and 5.10am on Tuesday morning.

“Call 0800 40 50 40 quoting 109 if you have any information which could help the investigation.”
