A FUNDRAISER raised thousands in memory of a mum who died in a tragic accident, and her son who died in 2016.

The Worcester News recently reported on Jo Durnford who organised the family fun day marking 30 years since her mum, Sue, died when she was 36-years-old in a scuba diving accident in Pembroke.

Miss Durnford was aged just 11-years-old when the tragedy happened.

Tragically, the 41-year-old's brother never got over the accident and he sadly committed suicide two-years-ago.

The event was held at the beginning of August at Worcester Early Years Centre, with Miss Durnford saying it proved a successful event. It featured face painting, as Miss Durnford is a local face painter who goes under her name Artistic Tinker, as well as sand art, unicorn pony rides, a bouncy castles, a princess and superman visit, an emergency services visit and a raffle.

Miss Durnford, who organised the event with the help of nine-year-old daughter, Emmie, said she was pleased as her original target of £1,000 was smashed, on the day £2,030 being raised, which has taken her overall total up to £7,075.

At the event Miss Durnford with the help of her daughter also released two white doves representing her mum and brother.

"It was a huge success with a great turn out," the Tibberton resident said.

"I want to thank everyone for their love and support as it really does mean the world to me."

The money raised will be going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and in particular the teams from two stations - David’s Lifeboat and Little & Broadhaven in Pembrokeshire.

RNLI's volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, while seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches. The RNLI also has a flood rescue team helping those affected by serious flooding events, and offers international support during emergencies.

Miss Durnford added she would be meeting the RNLI crews at the end of the month, including a few of the original crew who went to save her mum.

The family's fundraising website remains open for donations, which can be found at justgiving.com/remember/526480/Sue-Durnford.
