HUNDREDS of children flocked to the Croome estate, near Worcester, for a day of family fun,

The event was part of the Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge, organised by Worcestershire Libraries and Learning Service

Hundreds of children and families enjoyed scorching weather at one of the most stunning properties in the county.

The day rewarded those who have already read two books as part of the challenge or those who signed up on the day.

There was something for everybody with talks from author Jonathan Meres, creator of The World of Norm series, hip-hop poetry from shortlisted Birmingham Poet Laureate Kurly McGeachie, and s Lego workshops, performances from Secret City Arts and story walks taking families around the beautiful parkland.

Jonathan Meres said: “It was fantastic to meet so many eager young readers. It was a wonderful event, in a truly stunning location.”

Kurly McGeachie said: “It was a fun and adventurous day for all children and adults.

“The Mischief Makers summer reading challenge is such an enriching day out.”

Councillor Lucy Hodgson said: “We have had thousands of children from all over Worcestershire sign up so far and we are not even close to the end. There is still plenty of time to join in this wonderful challenge and keep your child’s passion for reading continuing throughout the summer. Simply pop in to your local library and speak to a member of staff who will sign you up.”

The next summer reading challenge day at Croome is on Wednesday, August 22, and entry is free to those who have read four books as part of the challenge.

The special guest is Kita Mitchell, author of Grandma Dangerous and the Dog of Destiny, who will be giving a talk and book signing, and Kurly McGeachie will be returning.
