SIR – It was pleasing to see in the tram article by Mike Pryce (Nostalgia, November 18), circa 1920s, the Cross/Foregate photo showing the classic “pointing finger”

sign post attached to a tall lamp standard showing the way to the Arcade Cinema, also showing the times, only two, of the features films.

This cinema went on to be Hardys Furniture store retaining the actual arcade. Now gone in the mist of time, joining St Swithuns Street to Church Street.

Before the Great War my great aunt and uncle were regular patrons of the cinema mentioned as teenagers.

He later was killed in action on the eve of Armistice Day and my great aunt’s sister was a conductor on the early electric trams later, moving on to the Midland Red Omnibus Co to pursue a long career.
