A FORMER Olympic silver medallist believes this year's half marathon will make the race 'bigger and better' than ever.

Steve Cram CBE, the director of the Worcester City 10K and the new half marathon taking place this year, hopes that around 4,000 people will take part in the three races on the day.

Mr Cram, who now works as a television presenter and athletics commentator, says that the new race will add another dimension to race day.

He said: "We are hoping to have around 4,000 entries on the day for the 10k, half marathon and junior run.

"The half marathon will go through the city, before heading into Lower and Upper Broadheath and going back into the city.

"The run has continued to grow in size and we are really looking forward to this year.

"We are excited to have Tanni Grey-Thompson at the race this year, with Worcester City Council keen to promote links to disability sport.

"Ben Smith who completed 401 marathons in 401 days is also taking part.

"The race is getting bigger and better, we have had great support from Worcester City Council and Upper and Lower Broadheath Parish Councils."

When asked what tips he would give to first time half marathon runners, he added: "It is important to trust your training and to be comfortable for the first few miles, if you watch elite runners the race does not really start until the last few miles.

"What is helpful with this course is that the last three miles or so just past the DewDrop Inn are all downhill so runners should make sure they are comfortable until then and if they have a bit left they can accelerate.

"Don't wake up on the day of the race and think you are a top runner all of a sudden."

As well as the 10k and half marathon, U11 athletes can take on a 1 mile loop and U16s can tackle a three kilometre route as part of the young athletes race.

The races, which are now in their fourth year, all take place on Sunday September 17, beginning at Croft Road.

The races are filling up fast, but there’s still time to secure a place by signing up at www.worcestercityrun.com.
