FORMER England captain Mike Gatting bowled over the winning team of this year's city street cricket competition.

He was on hand to present winners Heart of Worcestershire College with their award for winning the Worcestershire Street Sixes.

Worcestershire Ambassadors chairman Vince Hopkins said: “The Street Sixes was brilliant fun and everyone had a great time.

"The message behind the event is to inspire young people and help them on a path to success, using the spirit and motivation of sport.

"It was great to have the legend Mike Gatting supporting us at the final.

Everyone involved is now totally committed to promoting the benefit of playing cricket to these children.”

The event, sponsored by the Worcestershire Ambassadors, raised £6,496 for the Worcestershire street cricket programme which engages young people through cricket and then educates them by helping them write CVs, improve interview techniques as well as train them to deliver and sustain the street cricket programme itself, for other young people.

Twenty four teams played with a softball on a hard surface in the city centre in a fun and fast cricket format on July 10.

The final six teams played ten days later to find the overall winning team.

The fun event saw teams from Worcestershire businesses including Sanlam, Worcestershire Ambassadors, David Lloyd and BMW, Tesco, and the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce pitted against each other.

The aim was to have fun but also to raise funds to take cricket to the most deprived areas across the county, introducing disadvantaged children to the sport.
