A VOLUNTEER who provides transport assistance for people across the Wychavon district has won the coveted Worcestershire Black Pear Award.

Derek Potter, of Eckington, received the award for the work he does at Pershore Volunteer Centre.

He said: "I enjoy being a volunteer and of use to people. Volunteering is a lovely way to put something back into the community."

Cllr Lucy Hodgson of the county council said: "It was a pleasure to be part of the presentation of the Black Pear Tree to such well-deserving charities. Community transport is vital to every local community and it was a pleasure to acknowledge the work of the volunteer centre.”

Kate Walton, Pershore Volunteer Centre’s chief officer, said: “I am delighted that Derek’s volunteering have been recognised.

"Over the past 23 years, Derek has made a sterling contribution as a trustee and a very popular car and minibus driver. With his gentle manner and willingness to help out, Derek has helped to address the rural and social isolation experienced by many of our clients.

"He also devotes a significant amount of his time to the Cotswold Line Promotion Group and is actively involved in Eckington church as church warden, member of the deanery synod, and trustee and secretary for Eckington trust funds.

"Over the years, Derek has been involved in other voluntary organisations, including Citizens Advocacy, the Credit Union and minibus driving for local charities, taking their clients to lunch clubs or on social outings.”
