A TRADITIONAL ritual carried out at an annual town festival will go ahead – despite roadworks blocking the usual route.

St Richard's Canal Festival is set to take place in Droitwich this weekend, from Saturday, April 29, to Monday, May 1, and features a jam-packed schedule of events.

Every year the Probus'87 Club organises a re-enactment of a miracle in 1248, when Richard de Wych made the town's brine flow again.

The parade usually winds from the town centre to the Upwich Pit in Vines Park, but – due to a £650,000 project to revamp the High Street – a new path has been chosen for this Saturday's event.

Peter Hawkins, a Probus Club member, said: "This year the normal ‘sacred’ route from St Andrew’s Church, to the largest pit, the Upwich Pit, could not be taken because of restrictions in the High Street due to planned works there.

"It is expected that the parade will start from Victoria Square at 10am and finish at the Upwich Pit in Vines Park for the Blessing Service at 10.30am. Be there to witness this unique event."

It is just one of the many events taking place across the festival weekend, which last year attracted thousands of visitors.

On Saturday, foodies can peruse the Worcestershire Farmer's Market in Victoria Square, while motoring enthusiasts can browse the range of classic cars on show in Lido Park.

And on Sunday, there will be nature walks at 10.30am and 2pm, starting from the Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canal Society's gazebo.

Monday sees the return of the popular Duck Race, starting at 4.30pm in Vines Park – with the winner receiving £100, and there will be a Fun Dog Show in Vines Park too.

There will be plenty of music throughout the weekend, including performances from the Droitwich Community Choir, Worcester Ukulele Band, Helen Pearson and the Shady Band.

Beer lovers will not miss out either, as the Real Ale and Cider Bar will be open from Friday to Monday.
