SNOW ball fights, sleigh rides and a meeting with Father Christmas helped create memories for children from Worcestershire.

Eleanor Bedford, age 15 and five-year-old Lily Mai Bishop were among over 50 brave children who made magical memories on When You Wish Upon a Star (WYWUAS) Lapland trip.

The group flew from East Midlands Airport and were transported away from hospitals and appointments to spend quality time with their loved ones.

The annual trip was funded by donations, aiming to give children living with a life threatening illness and their families a chance to escape from the difficulties they face on a day-to-day basis.

It costs WYWUAS £90,000 to charter the private flight to Lapland – which is raised throughout the year by individuals, businesses, communities and schools.

Lily Mai’s mother enjoyed the trip, she said: "Developmentally Lily is between 12 and 18 months, meaning she was not quite sure who Santa is, but I can tell she is happy looking at all of the snow and animals.

"This trip is really special to us, as every memory and moment with Lily is priceless.”

The yuletide trip began with a magical plane ride, where children and guardians were encouraged to sing along to classic Christmas carols such as Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer and Jingle Bells.

Upon landing the group were taken to the Magical Forest, where they were greeted by mischievous elves and woodland creatures who challenged children to snowball fights and sleigh races.

Olivia Wood, corporate fundraiser at WYWUAS, said: “Our Lapland trip is extraordinary, as it gives the ultimate gift of smiles and happiness for children and families who are most in need.

"It would not be possible without the support we receive all year round, so we are so grateful to everyone who takes time to fundraise for us.

"The trip gives brave children like Eleanor and Lily Mai respite and time out from painful treatments to simply be a child for the day.

"It also gives parents a break and a chance to see their children smile, creating precious treasured memories which last forever."

After a busy day of sleigh rides, Siberian huskies and reindeers, the very special group of guests were guided to a hotel, where they were served dinner and met Father Christmas who gave each boy and girl a Christmas gift.

"We hope the pictures and memories from the Lapland trip stay with the families and children forever, we are so pleased to have hosted another fantastic journey to Lapland.

"All of the funds raised by everyday people really do create magic for these children, and we hope the Lapland trip reminds our supporters how much their efforts mean to the charity’s work."

It costs £900 for each child and their guardian to travel to Lapland.

WYWUAS is already gearing up for another year of fundraising, and is encouraging businesses and communities to support its work.
