PEOPLE in Worcestershire who suffer from heart disease are being reminded to take extra care this winter by getting vaccinated against flu.

People with heart disease could be at risk of complications if they contract flu, which can include pneumonia, respiratory failure, heart attack and even death.

But having the free flu jab can help avoid worsening pre-existing conditions, NHS health bosses point out.

In 2015, more than half the number of people with a chronic heart disease - 52 per cent - did not have a vaccination, putting themselves at risk.

Dr Kiran Patel, NHS England West Midlands medical director, said: “Flu can hit us all hard, but those with heart disease are more vulnerable and can suffer the hardest.

"But adding flu to the mix can be easily avoided. Get your free flu jab from your GP or pharmacy.

"It's free because you need it.”

Dr Patel added that as the virus changes each year, people with heart issues nearly to get vaccinated annually to protect themselves.
