A VILLAGE forged on with its fundraising plans despite arsonists attacking their play park and damaging equipment.

People enjoyed both a Macmillan Coffee Morning and Charity Harvest Fun Day at Norton Parish Hall, Littleworth, just weeks after the park was set on fire earlier this month.

Despite the extensive damage to the children's playground next to the parish hall, Saturday's event went ahead as planned, and proved to be a great success.

The Macmillan Coffee Morning raised over £150 and the fun day featured an array of stalls and activities brought together by a group of willing volunteers to create a lively event for all the family.

There was an emphasis on the community with much of the food sold sourced locally.

Proceeds from the fun day will be used to fund future community events.

The parish council hope to have the playground, which they called integral part of the facilities on offer at the hall, repaired in time for the Halloween and fireworks event scheduled for Saturday, October 29.

Arsonists struck overnight on Tuesday, September 6, damaging the £140,000 play park which had only been opened just over a year ago.

At the time, Norton juxta Kempsey Parish Council released a statement saying it was "extremely disappointed" about the damage to the playground.

"The council is extremely grateful to a passing parishioner for raising the alarm, and calling the fire brigade, who arrived within minutes," it said.

"Without this prompt action the entire play area would have been destroyed and potentially the parish hall burnt down.

"Following the incident, the community has rallied around to make the remaining play area safe and open for children to enjoy.
