A WELL known man who ran Sidbury Post Office with his wife for three decades has been remembered as a "very loving, caring and generous man".

Arthur "Bun" West, who ran the post office with his wife Marion until 2003 after taking over from her parents, passed away on Sunday, September 18.

Son Andrew West said his father, who was also known as Bernard, was popular in the Sidbury area and had many friends made during his time at the post office.

Arthur grew up in Rednal and later moved to Worcester to train as a mechanic.

He did his training at a garage in Bath Road but in 1960 moved to River View Service Station on Hylton road where he was the main mechanic.

He worked on general cars as well as race engines for Ford Anglias followed by Mini - one he built almost hit the lap record at Mallory Park race track.

He met his soon to become wife Marion who worked in her family's post office in Sidbury and later in the early 70s they both took over, running it for three decades.

His son said: "He was very well know in the Sidbury area and most of the population in those parts knew them and they had many good friends and relations because of the post office.

"He is going to be missed deeply by his family and everyone that knew him."

They had Andrew in 1980 and soon moved from living over the post office to Claines where they lived for nearly 30 years.

Arthur and Marion retired in 2003 and enjoyed their retirement mainly in their garden.

Marion passed away in 2008 and, due to ill health, Arthur moved to the Cotswolds to live with his son, daughter in law Becky and granddaughter Larissa.

Later he moved to a park home in the local area by himself where he again enjoyed pottering about in his garden and going off to town on his scooter.

Although he was confined to a wheelchair following a leg amputation on 2010, his son said it didn't let it stop him getting about.

Mr West said of his father: "He doted on his grandchildren Larissa and Elliot although sadly he is gone too soon to watch them grow up.

"Bun was a very loving, caring and generous man who was always helping neighbours and friends especially when it came to car problems.

"He spent many a Friday and Saturday fixing his nephew's cars, which he loved.

"It was very rare to find him without oil on his hands."

Arthur's funeral will take place at Worcester Crematorium at 10.45am on Friday, October 7. Donations to RNLI.

His son Andrew added: "Everyone is welcome to come as he was a social person so open funeral for all to come and say goodbye."
