PARALYMPIAN swimmer Rebecca Redfern will take part in a blindfolded walk through Worcester to raise money and awareness for Sight Concern.

Rebecca, who trains with Worcester Swimming Club, and will represent Great Britain in Rio next week will walk with her father Steve.

The challenge asks people to walk in pairs, one blindfolded, one sighted, for a mile along a designated route in the city centre.

Sight Concern Worcestershire hope the Walk the Blindfold Mile challenge will enable people to experience some of the everyday difficulties that blind and partially sighted people overcome on a daily basis.

Rebecca, aged 16 and from Droitwich is partially sighted, and competes in the classes for visually impaired para-swimmers.

Her dad Steve Redfern said: "I am incredibly proud of my daughter’s achievements.

"I am looking forward to taking part in the blindfold mile, to understand some of the challenges blind and partially sighted people overcome every single day to live independently and do things that many of us take for granted.

"I think this will be a very powerful and bonding experience."

The charity is looking for another 100 people to take part in the challenge in pairs on Saturday, September 24.

Walkers must pay £10 per person and raise a minimum of £50 each for the charity.

During the walk they will be able to swap over and at the end they will also be asked to carry out sensory challenges.

The money raised will go towards helping Sight Concern Worcestershire to support people with sight loss.

Jenny Gage, the charity's chief officer, said: "We are thrilled to announce that paralympian swimmer Rebecca Redfern has signed up to take part in Walk the Blindfold Mile, guiding her father Steve.

"She has recently broken the SB13 World Record in 100m Breaststroke and we wish her all the best for a medal at Rio.”
