A HOLOCAUST survivor has visited a Worcester school to tell students about her experiences.

Joanna Millan was orphaned during the Holocaust and survived as a toddler in a concentration camp in the Czech Republic for over a year.

She spoke to year 9 students at Christopher Whitehead Language College for an hour and a half about her experiences and that of her family.

The visit was arranged by year 12 history student Jessica Atkinson, following her visit to Auschwitz Birkenau as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz project.

The sixth former, who wants to be a teacher, wanted to find a way to help her schoolfriends understand the individual, human stories behind the mass of numbers involved.

Year 9 student Max Hodgetts said: "In my opinion I believe that as it was her own story it made it more personal, such as the loss of family members.

"I think that it was important because it helps us to not re write history as Joanna said herself.

"Also it keeps their legacy alive."

Pupil Abigail Knight-Langley added: "Her story inspired me to not take happiness and freedom for granted and gave me a new respect for holocaust survivors.

"Our history lessons cannot show the emotion and personal experiences that Joanna shared with us today.

"Therefore, I think that the talk gave us a further understanding of the victims of the Holocaust.

"Joanna showed us how the Holocaust continues to impact her life today and showed us to pay respect to everybody."

The visit took place on Friday, July 21.
