A CLOCK with over 100 years history has returned to the tower of a Worcester church and will soon be back up and running.

For more than a year time stood still on the clock face of the dial, which was lowered from the tower of St George's Church, in St George's Square, Barbourne at the end of May.

The 113-year-old clock stopped working in spring 2015 and a fundraising appeal was launched by the Friends of St George's Church to pay for repairs, which impressively managed to raise £15,000 in just 10 months.

This was through securing grants and the Just a Minute fundraiser, where people sponsored a particularly time on the clock for a reason personal to them.

The Just a Minute scheme was one of six finalists in the Ecclesiastical and Church Times Fundraising Ideas of the Year contest, securing a further £2,000.

In the weeks since the clock was taken down the clock numerals were re-guilded as part of a restoration and repair project.

After this was completed earlier today, (June 27), the clock was painstakingly lifted with ropes back up to the church's tower.

The operation was a two-man job which saw Stuart Morrison, of clockmakers Smith of Derby, and Jim Dovey, of Westcountry Access, managing to lift the clock, four feet in diameter and weighing 30 kilograms, 60 feet from the ground up to the turret of the church.

The lifting began at 12.10pm and took only 10 minutes.

Reverend Jo Musson said: "We were overwhelmed at people's generosity - it is amazing how important the clock is to them.

"They did an amazing job to get the clock up again.

"We want to thank all those who donated, and all the fundraisers including clock winder and chairman of the friends Michael Silvey, and Ian Pattison who did a lot of work to get the grants."

The clock is expected to start working later this week, once the final work needed is completed, and the chimes are set to restart at noon on Saturday, July 9, - the start of St George's summer fair.

The fair, taking place until 4pm, includes a variety of stalls, a tombola, refreshments, and games. Barbourne's Got Talent will also be taking place, with acts encouraged to register online beforehand at saintgeorgesworcester.org.uk.
