A WORCESTER rugby club says it is investigating after claims some of its players were accused of bullying a female doorman.

Earlier this week we reported how Rebecca Evans, who was working alone as a door supervisor at the Cardinal’s Hat in Friar Street, claimed she was surrounded, intimidated and bullied by the “large” and “intoxicated” men.

She had refused two of the six men entry to the pub on Saturday night, because they wished to eat their takeaway food inside the pub.

Her partner has since lodged an official complaint with Worcester Wanderers Rugby Club.

The chairman of Worcester Wanderers says he is collecting evidence and will take appropriate disciplinary action if there are grounds to do so, after many people across social media identified the players and club involved.

Adrian Harling, chairman of Worcester Wanderers, said: “Following a discussion with a Worcester News reporter that I had not received an official complaint, two hours later I did then receive an official complaint from a fellow Worcester News employee.”

“I am collecting evidence and investigating the matter.

“I cannot comment on what action the club will take at this stage of the investigation.”

Miss Evans, who has worked as a doorman at city nightspots for 17 years, says the six players swore at her, shouted at her, pushed her several times in the chest with chopsticks and one man made reference to the fact she was “lucky” she was a woman during the incident.

The other four men joined their two teammates outside, and the alleged intimidation went on for around two hours after she refused entry to all of them.

The men didn’t stop even after other customers had tried to intervene.

They are also said to have made continued insulting remarks about her weight and appearance.

She said in her report of the incident that they boasted about their ability as players, and at the height of the bullying she felt very threatened.

In reply to Miss Evans’ post on social media about the incident, Wanderers manager Stephen Lloyd replied saying: “These are Worcester Wanderers players and I apologise for any unruly behaviour, and assure you that they will be dealt with accordingly.”

A spokesman for the pub said the same players had been there the week before, and had caused trouble then too, while Miss Evans was working.

The players are currently banned from entering the pub, in Friar Street, on Friday and Saturday nights.

The team plays in the Midlands 1 West rugby league.
