FAMILIES can journey back in time as Witley Court holds a series of fun Victorian events this summer.

The packed programme promises a "good time" for all, enabling children and adults alike to get hands on with history.

A hundred years ago Witley Court was one of England's great country houses before a disastrous fire in 1937 turned it into a "spectacular ruin" - but the events this August will bring its heyday back to life.

On August 5 to 6 an 'ugly bug safari' led by a Victorian explorer will enable participants to discover marvellous minibeasts in Witley's grounds.

A week later on August 12 to 13 Edwardian fun and games will see families play croquet and hoops and mallets while on August 19 to 20 the 'We ARE Amused!' play will take a look at the lighter side of Queen Victoria.

Children can be put through their paces by a Victorian schoolmaster at the Victorian summer school on August 26 and 27 and then the summer fun will finish with a "fabulous finale" on August 30 and 31 - a Victorian fete featuring stalls and a travelling sideshow.

Jenny Davie, event manager at Witley Court, an English Heritage site, said: “In its day Witley was the place to be to have a good time – and this summer we will be bringing some of that partying spirit back.

“Our summer-long series of events gives young time-travellers the chance to experience some Victorian pursuits in a beautiful setting.

"I’m really excited about our Victorian fete and travelling show. It’s a brand new event with lots of colourful characters and things to do – and should be a suitably fitting finale to our summer of jolly good fun.”
