A teenager pushed over and injured a woman in her 60s because of an ongoing family dispute, Worcester Magistrates Court heard.

The court heard how Nathan Collins, of St Paul's Hostel, Worcester, pushed Denise Taylor, 66, to the ground causing her bruising to her arm after a row broke out over her granddaughter.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, said Miss Taylor lay prone on the ground after 19 year-old Collins had pushed her.

He said: "The incident happened after a row broke out over her granddaughter, as Miss Taylor did not approve of the relationship.

"The rowing carried on until Collins pushed her in the chest with his left hand, and she fell to the floor where she lay prone.

"Collins stayed in the vicinity and he was arrested.

"He accepts they do not get on, but told police in interview that it was an accident. However, CCTV clearly shows the push was deliberate, and he now accepts it was not accidental."

Belinda Ariss, defending, said: "Collins has been in a relationship with Miss Taylor's granddaughter for some time now but she does not approve of it.

"The couple were going to the pictures when this argument broke out. Miss Taylor approached Collins and got in his face. Collins had his arms around his girlfriend to protect her but Miss Taylor tried to remove his hands from her.

"While she was doing this he pushed her away and she stumbled and fell. He is sorry for the incident and has avoided Miss Taylor as much as he can since.

"He is currently working part-time at Worcester Warriors as a maintenance man."

District Judge Nigel Cadbury sentenced Collins to 80 hours unpaid work and ordered him to £100 in compensation and a victim surcharge of £60.

Mr Cadbury said: "This was an unfortunate incident, but this is not the way to go about an argument.

"To push a lady hard enough for her to fall to the floor is not the right way to act."
