A NEW pond and nature area has been officially opened at Elmley Castle CE First School, near Evesham.

An Awards For All grant of about £9,000 funded the development, which transformed a neglected, sludge-filled pond area into a modern facility with a viewing platform and bog garden.

Grass areas have also been planted with a variety of wildflowers while nectar-rich plants have been added to attract butterflies and insects.

Lee Poultney, a class teacher at the school, said: “After many years of neglect, it's wonderful news to finally be able to put our pond area to good use.

“I am sure that it will bring many hours of enjoyment and be a great educational resource for all involved.”

Beth McVicar, a year four pupil, added: "I think the new pond is great and is the best thing the school has done for all us children.

“I would like to say a big thank you."

The pond and wildflower areas will be used to complement curriculum learning and an after-school club may be set up to help maintain the environmental facility.

Parents and the local pre-school will also be able to visit the outdoor space.

The official opening was attended by Rupert Keys, of Keyscape Landscape Design and Construction, which undertook the improvement works, and Councillor Adrian Hardman, leader of Worcestershire County Council.

Elmley Castle CE First School has spaces available for children to join the school, including those from outside its natural catchment area.
