SLAVERY in Britain will be at the forefront of the police's mind tomorrow (Sat Oct 18) for National Anti-Slavery Day.

As part of the national awareness day West Mercia Police are encouraging people to help them combat modern day slavery and human trafficking.

Detective Superintendent Steve Cullen, head of protecting vulnerable people for West Mercia Police, said: "Slavery and human trafficking is often misunderstood as it can take many forms, ranging from the sexual exploitation of adults and children to forced labour and domestic slavery.

"It may be far more widespread in the UK and other developed countries than many of us realise.

"Police, working with partner agencies, have a vital role in tackling these crimes and it’s important that the public recognise the signs that someone may be being exploited.

"Modern slavery is a crime that exploits the most vulnerable people in our society and victims may appear to be anxious, fearful and unwilling to talk, they may work long or unusual hours and show signs of physical restraint, they may not even be allowed or able to speak for themselves."

Anyone who is concerned about someone or a group of people being exploited is urged to contact the Modern Slavery helpline on 0800 0121 700.
