THIS emotive image led to a photographer from Worcester being shortlisted in a national competition.

Paul Taylor's photo of 'the Tommy in the Clouds' is in the final dozen of the Memorial Awareness Board's annual contest.

The theme this year focused on the outbreak of the First World War and members of the public were asked to capture images of Great War memorials.

There were more than 200 entrants and Mr Taylor remains in the running for the £1,000 first prize.

Chris Lodge, a member of the Board's executive, said: “Memorials play an important part in our social history whether they are personal or public.

"This year’s theme will enable entrants to share their images of family headstones or village cenotaphs, all of which will tell a story and allow us to remember the sacrifice made so by many in the First World War."

Mr Taylor should find out at some point during October whether he has won the competition.
