           <description>
  There could have been no better way of starting our 2010 programme of events than with the presentation given to us in February at Clent Parish Hall, by Adrian James. Entitled Courtyard Gardens,
  Adrian enthralled an audience of over 40 members and guests with stories relating to these gardens throughout the world, illustrated with a plethora of exceptionally fine photographs. Our next
  event will be held on Friday, March 26, at Belbroughton church hall, when David Bates will be telling us of The Allotment Year. This presentation is in our Starting from Scratch series and should
  be filled with hints and tips for both the beginner and the seasoned gardener alike.

  Members of Bromsgrove U3A were delighted by David Warnham’s presentation on Tunes and Tubes? given at the March 4 meeting. This was an in-depth study of sounds produced down the centuries and from
  across the world. An endless supply of instruments appeared from under the counter. We began with a blast from a biblical ram’s horn, then on through a comprehensive range of horns to the alpen
  horn, which was assembled like a set of chimney sweep’s canes and extended into the audience. On then to the household kitchen instruments, products of our speaker’s most inventive talents – pots,
  pans, tubes, hosepipes, klaxons. Nothing seems to have been safe from conversion. We ended with modern brass instruments and a tune on the euphonium. As suggested we joined in and sang along with
  melodies we recognised, played on instruments we that we didn’t always recognise and all agreed that this had been very informative and an enjoyable afternoon. Come and join us, all information
  from our membership secretary at 01527 873410.

  With January’s meeting having to be cancelled because of the snow and ice, there were belated New Year greetings for members who gathered in February. It also meant there was a lot to cover during
  the evening.

  AN extraordinary general meeting was held in February. The chairman, Ruth Bottomley, gave a comprehensive review of the club’s financial problems and lack of nominees for office, to the subdued
  members present. Following considerable discussion, with diverse views and ideas from members – all of whom wished the club to continue – a number came forward willing to serve on the committee,
  which was most welcome. Members then enjoyed light refreshments, followed by a raffle and agreed to a small levy to re-start the club in a financially sound position. Wendy Berrows thanked Ruth, as
  chairman, for all her hard work and generosity to the club and presented her with a floral arrangement.

  AT the February meeting we were pleased to have John Robinson from Bewdley for our speaker. He was an expert in natural history, having worked in it all his life and for many years as a warden in
  the Wyre Forest Nature Reserve. He told us some of the history of the Wyre Forest and that the trees were cut down in vast numbers to produce charcoal. So many were felled that there are now no
  veteran trees left.
