NEW measures to combat speeding motorists on roads in Cookley and Clows Top roads will be launched this month.

Worried residents raised concerns about the number of cars travelling at high speeds on Castle Road in Cookley and the B4202 Clows Top.

And to address this, the Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is putting cameras at the two locations. This is part of a wider speed enforcement operation across Worcestershire.

Data collected at the site showed 15 per cent of vehicles using Castle Road travelled above 37mph while more than half of drivers exceeded the 30mph speed limit.

And on the B4202 Clows Top, 15 per cent of drivers travel above 35mph while 36 per cent of drivers exceed the 30mph limit.

Residents have previously called for action on the B4202, particularly at its junction with the A456, which saw a fatal crash in February this year in which emergency medical technician Gavin Hunt tragically died.

Sergeant Stuart Allen said: “We are launching these new community concern sites across Worcestershire to address the high level of concern in each of the local communities.

“Data collected has highlighted unacceptably high speeds and local people are understandably concerned. With a high number of vehicles travelling on each of the roads every day, and their close proximity to residential areas, they represent risk to all road users.

“We hope that the presence of a speed camera will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed.

“This will help to improve the quality of life for people living in the areas, reduce the risk of harm, and improve the safety of the roads for all those who use them.”

He added data will be collected while the sites are in operation to assess the impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.
