WITH the centenary of the First World War in mind, Droitwich History and Archaeology Society is hosting a talk on a battle from 1914, which had a great impact on the people of Worcestershire.

Mark Jackson will be giving an illustrated talk on the Battle of Gheluvelt, which took place on October 31, 1914 near Ypres in Belgium, when the 2nd Worcestershire managed to turn the tide of a fight that had been going on for three days, countering after German troops broke through the line near Gheluvelt.

Gheluvelt Park in Worcester is named in memory of the battle.

The talk will be taking place in the John Corbett Room of Droitwich Community Hall from 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 3. Entrance is £2 for society members, or £4 for visitors, and anyone is welcome to attend.
