THE appeal is out for Ledbury people to help with the organising of the town's Christmas Lights event.

The costs of the lights, including provision and maintenance, is typically in the region of £10,000, and once again Ledbury Town Council will shoulder the financial burden.

But this year, the organisation will be largely down to the community.

The event, which traditionally starts the festive season, often attracts hundreds of visitors to the town centre, where carols are sung and performed, and where there is even a visit from Father Christmas.

Santa's grotto, which is usually located in the panelled room of the town council offices, is very popular with younger residents.

With months to go, the town council is already planning ahead and asking for help.

The chairman of Ledbury Town Council, Cllr Nina Shields said: "It may be summer but the town is starting to prepare for Christmas.

"The ‘switch on’ of the Christmas lights will be on Saturday November 24 and the town council is in the process of ordering the lights."

She added: "The working party is getting organised and, as usual, our town traders are planning events for the big day. The Council recognises that our traders and community members are best placed to identify what will attract business into the town and provide an enjoyable event for all."

This year, the success of Christmas Lights switch-on will be down to many hands.

Cllr Shields said: "The town council will continue to fund the provision and maintenance of the lights but has encouraged traders and members of the community to take the lead on organising the 'switch on' event.

"Local lady Brenda Hill has kindly volunteered to lead on this. Additional help is always welcome and if you would like to volunteer, please leave your name and contact details with the office (tel. 01531 632306 admin@ledburytowncouncil.gov.uk )."
