DANGEROUS drivers, irresponsible parking and rubbish clean ups were carried out as part of a crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour in Oldbury.

Sandwell’s Safer 6 campaign, which has been organised by the council and partner organisations, focused on Oldbury in its second week between October 2 and 8.

Officers undertook a number of operations and activities during the week in the Bristnall, Langley, Oldbury and Old Warley wards.

Among the activities was a speed operation by police in Broadmoor Avenue and Salop Road, Bristnall which resulted in one driver receiving a ticket for travelling at 45mph in a 30mph zone. A further seven motorists received warnings.

Community speed watches were held by police and neighbourhood services in Tame Rise and Queensway in Old Warley, Brook Road in Langley, and Tividale Road in Oldbury. Seven drivers received warnings.

Trading standards officers held alcohol test purchases at seven shops in Oldbury. Two shops sold to the underage volunteer and now face further action.

Council wardens issued two dog mess fines, in Hydes Road and Brunswick Park, Wednesbury, and lifted two abandoned vehicles and six untaxed vehicles.

Pupils in schools across the area were also visited for awareness and advice sessions on issues such as knife crime, the impact of anti-social behaviour and road safety.

Offenders doing unpaid Community Payback cleared tonnes of dumped rubbish from a passageway and communal area on the Lion Farm estate and cut back an overgrown area at an old allotment site in Beeches Road.

Neighbourhood officers, alcohol awareness officers, councillors and Litterwatch held a litter pick in Oldbury town centre.

Residents were also given crime prevention packs, fire safety information and advice on dealing with bogus callers by police, fire and council officers during the week through events such as a roadshow held at Oldbury Civic Square.

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Oldbury town lead member, said: “This is just a snapshot of the excellent work carried out by partner organisations during the week.

“I would like to thank everyone in the Safer 6 team for making a big difference and providing this extra advice and reassurance to local people.”
