A WOMAN and her daughter escaped a car after it caught fire on a major city road.

Claire Smith, aged 33, from Worcester was in the car with her seven-year-old daughter travelling along City Walls Road near Sports Direct at around 4pm when the engine stopped working.

Smoke soon started to pour from the bonnet and Ms Smith and her daughter quickly got out of the car.

Ms Smith said the car door on her daughter's side had locked and she had to pull out from the driver's side.

"The engine has completely melted and the car was towed to a garage," she added.

"I just want to say the emergency services and staff from Sports Direct were amazing and also thanks to the passers-by that tried to help."
