UNDAUNTED by soaring temperatures, Kington's plucky competitors were out in force yet again for this year's epic Wheelbarrow Race, a manic helter-skelter chase through the streets and a high point of the town's annual festival.

This highly original event, launched way back in 1976, pits a line up of partakers ranging from builders to brides in varying costumes, who are required to dash from pub to pub – quaffing half a pint of beer at each stop – before crossing the finishing line outside the Burton Hotel.

"We thought there might be a dip in entries because of the hot weather," says Emma Hancocks, "but the number was well over 30 once again which is very encouraging.

"It was another great evening and the streets were completely packed, so it was a nice way to top off the festival."

Held in great affection in the community, the race proved an eye opener for visitors from Australia while no fewer than four hen parties, including a Staffordshire bride and her 'hens' joined in the fun.

"We've been told there's only one other wheelbarrow race in the country, but they started after us," says Emma. "This was our 41st year and it's so well-established. Each year it amazes me how popular it is!"

Pubs along the course provided beer for contestants, and Kington Golf Club and Kington Football Club were both on hand with extra stopping points.

"It used to be that only one member of the team had to drink, but now every member drinks at each stop," says Emma.

"Obviously quite a lot of beer is consumed by all the competitors, I don't think I'd want to know how much, that might be a little bit scary!"

Prizes for the winners are donated by Hobson's Brewery and Weston's cidermakers. The Hedley Simcock fancy dress award was won by David James and Geoff Cooper.

Other winners included: Ed Bullock and Joel Bayliss; Dave Hughes and Peter Smith; Simon and Emma Turner; Tess Harker. Best ladies fancy dress award was won by a visiting hen party.
