A STUDENT who helps mentor other students has been presented with a volunteering award.

Murren Harker was given the Tryangle award in the Citizenship and Environment category to acknowledge her work as a peer mentor at Worcester Sixth Form College.

The annual volunteering awards celebrate the efforts of young people in Worcestershire who show they are good citizens through volunteering within their local community, either by improving the environment or promoting well-being.

The College’s student services department nominated Murren for the award after she helped build the confidence of other students as a mentor and acted as a student ambassador, supporting the College during open evenings and other events.

Helen Waldram, head of student services, said: "Murren joined us in 2015 after being home schooled.

"The transformation from then, as a rather quiet, reserved individual, to now where she is wholly involved in College life and goes out of her way to use her own time to support others is just heart-warming.

"She has an empathy and kindness that makes her a popular choice as a peer mentor.

"She radiates a positive and cheerful attitude and will go that extra mile for staff and students alike."

Murren said: "It was a very lovely event, humbling as there were so many young people who had gone above and beyond."

The awards evening took place in March at Worcester Bosch Headquarters.

The College has extended its peer mentoring scheme which was piloted in 2015-16.

This year, the Student Services’ counselling team have trained twenty-one second year students.
