A KIDDERMINSTER van driver who failed to pay a £75 penalty for littering has been hit with a fine four times that amount.

Scott Crowther, aged 22, appeared before Kidderminster Magistrates on November 20 and pleaded guilty to a charge of littering.

The court heard that Crowther, of Waterside Grange, Kidderminster, had not paid a £75 fixed penalty notice, issued by Wyre Forest District Council’s Enforcement Officers, for his original offence.

Nina Dorrell, prosecuting for Wyre Forest District Council, told the magistrates how on 17 April 2015, Mr Crowther threw a rolled up silver foil ball, approximately the size of a tennis ball, from a passenger’s side of a van, onto the A442 Worcester Road in Kidderminster.

He was subsequently issued with a fixed penalty notice for the offence, which he failed to pay.

Magistrates fined Scott Crowther £75. He was further ordered to pay £20 victim surcharge, £150 court charge and prosecution costs of £75.

Councillor Ian Hardiman, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Services said: “As an authority, we take littering very seriously and have a duty to keep the district safe, clean and looking good.

“I appreciate that the majority of residents dispose of their rubbish appropriately, however there’s a small minority who do not – I hope this incident serves as a reminder that littering will not be tolerated.”
