RESIDENTS at Breme Care Home in Bromsgrove have been getting busy in the kitchen creating their own mouth-watering chutneys as part of World Alzheimer’s Day.
Staff and residents at the home in Providence Road, spent the day peeling, chopping, dicing and stirring, in an relaxed activity that hopefully also brought back memories for a few people.
Resident Margaret Devane, really enjoyed the day. She said: “We added cinnamon sticks to the ingredients and the smell was just so beautiful. It took me back to my childhood years – my mother’s recipe was the best.”
Resident Barbara Gittins, added: ““The smell of it cooking was overwhelming and I can’t wait to taste the chutney – if it tastes as good as it smells it will be marvellous.”
The home’s activities leader Helen Barron was pleased with the way the activity seemed to bring back a lot of happy childhood memories for residents. She said: “Some of our residents live with dementia so this was an activity which made us all think. We are going to jar up the chutney and put pretty ribbons and labels on them so that we can give them to our residents’ loved ones.”
World Alzhiemer’s Day took place on September 21, with people around the world uniting to raise awareness of and challenge stigmas associated with Alzheimer’s and other kinds of dementia.
