300 YOUNG volunteers from disadvantaged areas of the country spent a weekend in Bromsgrove recently through national sports charity StreetGames.

The youngsters who are aged 16-25, were in town to attend the British Athletics Championships in Birmingham, and stayed at Blackwell Adventure, where they had the chance to try some more unusual sports of their own.

The young people were given the opportunity to try their hands at everything from rock climbing to bubble football, as well as some more traditional sports including as rounders and rugby.

A spokesman for StreetGames, which gives disadvantaged youngsters something to look forward to and a chance to get away from home life, said: “The average Brit takes three holidays a year, but these young people come from families who sadly can’t afford this. StreetGames has previously organised trips to Commonwealth Games, London 2012 and this year participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Rugby World Cup. These trips have a powerful long lasting impact. A new experience can change a young person’s outlook and perspective on life whilst also boosting their confidence and giving them new skills to take home with them.”

The young people also received a visit from local MP Sajid Javid, and spent their evenings taking part in a fancy dress competition, along with Dragon’s Den style pitches and team building exercises.
