A SCHEME to help insecure and vulnerable people feel safer and more confident, whilst out in their communities, is being launched in Redditch.

The Safe Place Scheme enables people to find a quiet and safe place to take a moment or seek help when around the town centre and other nearby areas.

Local businesses can sign up to be a ‘Safe Place’ and they will display a sticker in the window to help identify them and will have trained staff on hand to provide support and reassurance.

Townsfolk are also being encouraged to register on the scheme and receive a special contact card.

Ken Hazeldene, chairman of the North Worcestershire Hate Incident Partnership, said: “When alone, a busy town centre or shopping area can feel daunting and if someone is feeling particularly vulnerable for whatever reason, these environments can feel totally overwhelming.

“This new scheme is excellent because it means that people can take a break from the hustle and bustle, compose themselves and regain a feeling of security ready to take on shops without fear.”

The scheme will launch on Wednesday, May 13 at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

The Worcestershire Safe Place Scheme has been funded by the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner and is being set up in towns across the county over the year.

It has already launched in Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn, Bewdley and Worcester City.
