Upton Warren firm fined after residents supplied with borehole water

AN Upton Warren firm has been fined after Leek residents were supplied with untreated drinking water meant to wash cars with.

The branch of P J Hirons Management Limited, based in The Durrance, Berry Lane, has been fined £600, plus costs of £14,487.40 and a victim surcharge of £15, for a breach of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.

The successful prosecution was brought by Severn Trent Water.
The case was heard at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on September 18.

In January 2012, P J Hirons, a specialist contractor, was employed by a haulage company to install an untreated water supply from a borehole.

The supply was intended to be used to wash vehicles, but the installation was carried out by the firm in such a way that this supply was connected to the public water supply.

Severn Trent was made aware of a water quality issue by customers in Cheddleton, near Leek, who had discoloured water and complained of taste issues.

Severn Trent issued do not drink notices to properties in the area, as a precautionary measure.

Andy Smith, water services director for Severn Trent Water, said: “As soon as we were contacted by customers we immediately followed up the issue.

“We discovered the connection was fitted without adequate care and attention.

“We rapidly rectified the situation to avoid any further concern for those affected.

“Our customers pay for high quality water, so it is important we prosecute offenders in appropriate cases and take action to recover costs where possible.”

“Rather than having to take action in court, we would prefer to work together with businesses to prevent any breaches occurring in the first place.”
